Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo (Italian artist, 1868-1907). Young Woman with a Crown of LaurelGiuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo (1868-1907) was an Italian Pointillist painter. Born into a family of small landowners in Volpedo, he completed his academic studies at some of the most important Italian academies of his time (the Brera Academy in Milan; the San Luca Academy, & the French Academy in Rome; the school run by the painter Giovanni Fattori in Florence; the Carrara in Bergamo; & the Ligustica in Genoa). At the beginning of the 1890s, he decided to move permanently back to Volpedo, where he married 17-year-old Teresa Bin. Pelizza was one of Italy's most important artists of the late 19th & early 20th centuries, when his life was shattered by the death of his beloved wife during the birth of their 3rd son. Deep depression over his loss led to his suicide in 1907.
