Gerard Terborch (Ter Borch) (1617-1681) was a portrait painter, who also specialized in genre paintings which represented bourgeois figures engaged in various domestic tasks or elegantly dressed figures set within luxurious interiors. (Speaking of elegant, his self portrait is priceless!) Terborch's work inspired such artists as Pieter de Hooch, Gabriël Metsu, & Caspar Netscher (1639-1684), his leading pupil.

17C Women in Turbans

1615 Robert Peake the Elder (c. 1551–1619) Lady Elizabeth Pope, wearing a draped mantle and matching turban.

One of my favorite early turbans in the Turquerie style which was the Orientalist fashion in Western Europe from the 16C to 18C for imitating aspects of Ottoman art and culture. It is Robert Peake's dark turban of 1615 seen above.  Turbans regained popularity in the early 19C, when the style of fashion was called Orientalism.
